The bustling city of Cusco has an abundance of cobblestone streets, narrow hidden alleyways, and a beautiful main square which reminds many individuals of the quaint cities of Venice and Italy in Europe. People often arrive in Cusco and never leave, choosing to stay and set up their lives in the beautiful  Inca city; the ambiance of the city attracting people from all over the world. Cusco is located in the middle of a valley not far from the rainforest, so there is an abundance of fresh produce to enjoy including bananas, apples and tropical fruits such as mango and papayas. The city of Cusco is one of the most popular tourist destinations in South America, as its diverse geography allows people to experience the cobblestone streets of Europe and the tropical paradise of the rainforests and jungles at the same time. It’s hard to imagine  why hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world choose to visit this magnificent place visitor every year. Now, onto more important business. Food! If you are a vegetarian, then never fear! The city of Cusco has many great vegetarian restaurants, so if you plan to travel to Cusco you surely won’t go hungry.

In the past, traveling to Peru as a vegan or vegetarian was not always as easy as it is now, but in Cusco there are many culinary choices for the vegos and vegans out there and in this article, we will give you some of the best restaurants available that specialise in vegan and vegetarian cuisines.

The first restaurant featured in this article, is the Green Point Vegan restaurant in the San Blas area of Cusco This delightful restaurant is all vegan so the choice of food is endless! The menu features fresh juices, healthy appetizers, great soups, salads and some really delicious desserts. The restaurant is generally full and you may have to wait for a table, but if you love fresh produce, then this little gem is well worth the wait.

Another great little place is Govinda Lila, again in the San Blas district of Cusco. This quaint place is tucked away so you may need to have a good look to find it, but the friendly people of Cusco will undoubtedly be more than willing to help you find your way there. At Govinda Lila, there is a vegan lunch for around US$2.00. The food is simple and delicious, and let’s not forget. Affordable! The owner, Mama Lila is very warm and welcoming and her soups are probably the best around. This little gem is tucked away for a reason, and have no doubts, these affordable prices are no indication of the quality of this delicious food. With low prices and great food what more could you want?  

Sitting close to the Plaza de Armes is Greens Organic, where everything on the menu is 80 to 100 percent organic. Greens organic offers something for everyone with choices for vegan, gluten free eaters and non-vegetarians. The Olive Bruschetta is delicious as are the curries and desserts like the mango ravioli which is indescribable and can only be understood by being eaten. Greens Organic is a little more pricey than the other restaurants but the food is fabulous and the staff are very friendly so it is well worth a fancy diner whilst on your trip in Cusco.

Another restaurant is the German owned Granja Heidi, which has something to offer for all palets. Using local produce, the restaurant serves healthy, fresh and fragrant Peruvian food. Every lunchtime there is a set menu featuring soup, a main course and a beverage. The restaurant has two levels. Downstairs on the main floor, the scenery is very attractive housing many plants which are seerounded by the natural light. This green room gives the illusion to patrons, that they are in a garden of forrest. Come down to Granja Heidi, and take a seat, a starter of quinoa salad or soup and a delicious main will make the rest of your day pleasant one.

The delightful Prasada has two locations and is a simple café that specializes in veggie burgers, taco´s, falafel, soups, sandwiches and salads all at great prices. However, what makes Prasada extra special is the fruit juices, any combination that you can think of is sold here and they are all served in the most ridiculously huge glasses you will see in Cusco.

A very popular restaurant with our international visitors is the Jack´s Café in Choquechaca Street, featuring one of the best veggie burgers in Cusco, and for our sweet tooth’s out there, the banana pancakes and French toast are a great breakfast choice too. This restaurant is not only for vegetarians but meat lovers alike.

If you love your soups then the tiny little restaurant, Mr. Soup is for you, not all soups offered at Mr. Soup are vegan but the ones that are a delight to everyone. When the cold weather comes about in Cusco, this warm cozy restaurant is just the ticket! The menu features simple veggie soup but also a curry udon and a pac pow. All the soups are served with either rice or bread to  keep you nice and warm but importantly to fill your stomach and leave you satisfied.

In Cusco and all over Peru, the choice of street food is amazing! In the morning, you should try the porridge like drink that is made from quinoa with apples. Served on most street corners this breakfast only costs only s/1 for a glass. The local women also have many other special tasty drinks to enjoy in the early morning along with freshly made sandwiches, and a great breakfast for less than US$1.00. Freshly squeezed orange juice is available everywhere you go and if you have the time go to one of the local markets and get freshly prepared juices, do so, because luckily these freshly pressed juices come with a second glass free of charge if you ask.

So if you are worried about the cuisine options and fear you will starve in fear of a scared stomach on your next Peru holiday or luxury vacation. Then do not worry! There are many amazing choices for everyone’s needs and wants, too many to name in this article, so rest assured, you will not go hungry here in Cusco.
