Colca Canyon: the best place to see Condors in Peru

For all you nature lovers out there, traveling to Peru can be the trip of a lifetime. Most people who travel to the canyon set out from the Southern Peruvian city of Arequipa. Arequipa is without a doubt one of the nicest cities in Peru, both climate and city wise. The colonial city is built from white volcanic rock, giving it the name ‘the white city’ and it is surrounded by three volcanoes with El Misti still active.

Travel out of Arequipa and past the volcanos to the town of Chivay, and in this quaint little town, you can enjoy the wonderful hot springs at La Calera, soaking away your travel pains whilst enjoying the hot springs overlooking an amazing views of the Andes Mountains. The journey to Chivay will take around six hours to complete passing some spectacular scenery on the way, so make sure you’re camera ready.

Travel from Chivay to the Colca Canyon will take an hour and the Colca Canyon is unlike any other canyon you will ever visit. The canyon is fertile and inhabited, with pre Columbian terracing and traditional Andean villages, some villages date back two thousand years and the ancient peoples who built the villages also built irrigation systems in the terraces which collects water from the snowfall. At the canyon, you will see Sabancaya Volcano, standing  at 19600 feet above the canyon it is considered one of the most active volcanoes in the Americas.

Cabanaconde

At the canyon there are quite a few treks that are available, guiding tourists down into the deepest parts of the Canyon. During a visit at Colca Canyon, you will have the option of staying overnight at one of the many villages surrounding the canyon. If you take a short walk down to River Colca, you will see the quaint village of Cabanaconde, we highly suggest you stay here.

One of the best views of the Canyon can be seen from the Cruz del Condor Mirador. From here, you will have access to some of the best views of Colca Canyon, and see the wonderful Andean Condor; native to South America, the bird resides within the  canyon. A relative of the vulture, the condor is not a very attractive looking bird up close, but when taking flight, the bird is quite majestic as it gracefully soars  the thermal drafts created in the canyon with its wing span of 10.5 ft. For a once in a lifetime experience and an opportunity to see the condor, visit Colca Canyon during the dry months of May to December and make sure to take your camera, as the birds are not camera shy and do come very close.

It is also worth visiting the Canyon during rain season, as the surrounding jungle and plant life is very lush and green and with astounding flowers in full bloom.
